Today's Jadenism

I was trying to explain the concept of blackmail to Jaden.  (Here he is in the leaf man hat he made for himself today from the movie "Epic".)
I told him it would be like if I had a picture of him in a dress and I made him do all of the dishes so I wouldn't show it to Luke and Holden... that would be blackmail.  He replied: "sounds more like blackFEmale to me." Shooting a sideways glance at his sister, Insinuating a male would never do such a thing.  :)

almond flour pancakes

I made almond flour pancakes today for breakfast.  They were not a hit.  Aubrey and Baylee were complaining about them when Jaden piped in: "guys, stop complaining, we've been through much worse."  Thanks kid.

Kid Quotes

"Jaden, I know this is a fun day, but it is also the anniversary of something terrible... Pearl Harbor Day...the Japanese attacked our Navy and killed thousands of our men.". J: "Oh, I know, it's awesome, because then we dropped an atom bomb on them and destroyed most of their cities. We won. Can you imagine all of those people laying around in the sun and enjoying the beautiful state of Hawaii, and then getting bombed??? Why would those Japanese do such a thing??? I'm glad we won.". Haha, I love this kid.

Kid quotes

Jaden was doing his schoolwork and I noticed he missed one of the questions. It was a picture of a little boy praying with a big feast in front of him. Instead of thankful, Jaden marked Trustful. He is notorious for looking only at the first letter of the word and guessing. I told him he missed number 6 and he needed to re-do it. He re-read it and said, "I really thing that trustful is a word we don't use enough. Also, we should always be trustful when someone gives us food. We need to be trustful that they didn't put anything yucky in it.". It never ceases to amaze me how hard he works to get out of work!

Kid Quotes

I was trying to get the kids to answer the question, "How do people know we are Christians if we don't tell them?"  The answer of course being by our love for one another... Jaden thought about it and responded, "I think that they can tell if we speak in wisdom and dress like Jews."  I kind of laughed and asked him how Jews dress, he answered, "You know, neat and clean and funny hats."  I told him that that was a good try, but incorrect.  He said, "OK then, we must wear a sign.  You know, like at the dentist when they put that paper on you with those little clips.  We could just write it on there."  :)  Of course by that time I had completely forgotten the original problem, which was the kids speaking unkindly to each other.  Sometimes I think he does that on purpose to throw me off track.  It is exceedingly difficult to diagnose and treat heart problems in these little comedians!

Kid Quotes

Tony was telling me a Sammy Davis Jr. joke and Baylee was listening. She asked what we were talking about, and he explained to her that a long time ago, black people had to sit in the back when they rode on a bus. She asked, "What is a black person?" with a very puzzled look on her face. We laughed. Tony said, "It is just someone with darker skin than you have. Do you know anyone with darker skin than yours?" She looked at me, puzzled still, and said "no". We laughed again. She skipped out of our room and started playing with her sisters, clearly not understanding why grown ups talk about such silly things.

Jaden: "I don't believe that "read" is a verb, there is not much action going on when you read."

Kid Quotes

At lunch today, Jaden and Baylee were in an argument about a toy, I was choosing to postpone addressing that as I was in a heated debate with Tony about Carol Sorrell... I felt this little hand on my arm and looked down to see Aubrey (the only one who actually does what we always tell the kids to do and touch our arm and wait for acknowledgement before asking their question.) I say, "yes Aubrey?" He says, over all of the noise, in his sweetest little voice "Excuse me Mommy, it is just getting a little crazy in our house right now." And walked away. :) We had to agree, there are a lot of people that make a lot of noise in our family right now!

Kid Quotes

"Mommy, I really need to dump out all of the toys so that I can find the remote control to the eighteen fire missle." "Ok Aubrey, but you have to pick them all up when you are finished, ok?" "Well, there's just one problem, that is really hard work, and I don't really like really hard work."

Kid Quotes

I've been noticing lately that Aubrey has very specifically been asking for green apples. He has talked a little bit about red and green apples, but I never seemed to hear the whole thought because he is always being interrupted or overshadowed by a louder sibling. I assumed that he had developed a preference for green apples, like Jaden and me. (I mean, they really are better.) Anyway, today at lunch he asked me, "Mommy, do you like red apples?" I could tell this was a serious question that had been bothering him, so, assuming that he really liked red apples better but had been choosing green because Jaden and I always do, I answered with, "Of course, red apples are yummy!" He went on, "Well, I learned in Sunday School that Adam and Eve were in the garden of Eden and they ate RED apples and God did not like that." I laughed, and was impressed that he took so much of his lesson in and let it affect his eating habits. It was neat to see his little heart convicted about something and to see him try to do the right thing. I told him of course, that God was unhappy because Adam and Eve disobeyed. They ate from a tree that they were forbidden to eat from, however, the trees from Pulford's orchard are not forbidden and we are free to enjoy red apples all we want. He had a red apple today for a snack. Jaden and I had green ones. :)

Kid Quotes

I had a meeting this morning with Jaden's resource teacher. She always has funny stories to tell me about Jaden in class and today was no different. One of the stories she told me though was so funny and also embarrassing that I thought, "of course that needs to go on the blog, right?" I will start by saying that when we got to school, one of the teachers from his enrichment classes walked up and very enthusiastically greeted Jaden. He very sweetly said, "Hi Mrs. Culbertson! How are you doing today?" They had a great dialogue and she made it clear to me that she adored him. I walked away feeling very good that she liked him so much and that he was doing so well in her class. THEN... Becky said at the end of the meeting,
OK, I have a funny Jaden story, but you have to promise that you won't be embarrassed or upset with him because it was pure innocence and honesty. We all love him and have been quoting him all week." What kind of thing is that to say to a parent? Nothing strikes fear into my heart like hearing, "You will not believe this thing Jaden said!" (Which, I hear constantly!) So, I said, "Um, ok Becky, but you are making me nervous." She laughed. By this time, Mrs. Culbertson was out of the room thankfully. Her story went like this: "Jaden was standing at the front of the line in Mrs. Culbertson's classroom. He kept bumping into her and he finally said, "Hey, Mrs. Culbertson, you keep bumping me!" She replied, "You keep bumping me Jaden, I am standing still." He said, "Oh, well, it's ok, you are just a little fat." ---------------- WHAT??? I could not believe he would say that, nor could I believe he said it to the same lady that came up to him and complimented him so generously. Becky said, "Mrs. Culbertson was actually happy that he said she was just a "little bit" fat. We have been quoting him all week when something goes wrong, we just say, "it's ok, I'm just a little bit fat." What in the World?? What am I going to do with this child?

While I'm at it... there was another day when we saw Mr. Owens as we were walking out of school. Mr. Owens is the ag teacher and Jaden adores him. He always tries to get his attention if he can. He sees him, but Mr. Owens doesn't have on his signature cowboy hat. So, what else would Jaden yell out across the campus but, "Hey Mr. Owens!!! You look really cool with your hat...... on."
